Game of Thrones - VFX

During summer I started watching one of the most popular series, Game of Thrones (GOT). When you are watching a tv show you never imagine that the VFX would be amazing, and it's all because of the budget. But in this case, GOT has an avg, budget of $8m per episode, that is around $540m for the whole tv show. They create believable creatures, cities and even entire armies.

One of the most brilliant works they have done and the fire-breathing dragons. Throughout the whole serie the show how the dragons have grown from a baby to a full size adult dragon. The creators said the dragons are based on real life animals, such as alligators, lizards and bats. Every move from the dragon is replicated from a series of wildlife animals.

The scene of Drogon, one of the dragons, getting in the arena was created by an award winning company named, Rythm & Hues Studio. The scene was composed by both, visual and practical effects. For example the fire that the dragon is breathing is real fire on set, the vfx team didn't have to worry about adding cgi fire.

Throughout the tv show, I would say the dragons are a great example of vfx, and how photoreal a 3D model should be. And even though there are no real dragons, the use of reference is always very helpful to create a photoreal dragon. For the VFX I would give a 8.9 out of 10. There is always space for imporvement. The CGI dragons look very photoreal to me.
